Early emphasis on patient care

The Problem Based Learning Curriculum brings medical students closer to patients earlier than do most other medical education programs. Students begin working with patients during their first week of school. The curriculum focuses on learning through problem solving, and seeks to better address societal and behavioral issues in health care. In addition, physician assistant students, medical students and medical residents receive a valuable part of their education (and their perspective) in medically underserved areas - a required component of their primary care training.

Training tomorrow's researchers

In addition to its clinical curriculum, the College of Medicine will train the next generation of investigative scientists and educators. The Program in Biomedical and Health Services Research will expose students to a broad array of research, drawing on the expertise of distinguished faculty members from various departments. The program is designed to assist students in identifying a research focus and allows them to pursue their interests across scientific disciplines before committing to a specific program of study.

The goal of our research program is to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability, from the common cold to the rarest genetic disorder. The mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. We will work towards that mission by: conducting research in our own laboratories; helping in the training of research investigators; and fostering communication of medical and health sciences information.

The University College of Medicine will have a leading program in medical informatics and clinical epidemiology, which studies the use of both patient-specific information and general scientific knowledge as it pertains to health care and research
